Chateau Bee Insight on LGBTQ+ Wedding Venues France
Let’s start by saying: every venue in our selection has pledged that they are LGBTQ+ friendly.
At Chateau Bee, our mission has always been to simplify the search for the “one” – that perfect, soulful space where you feel entirely yourself. France has long been a pioneer of Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité, and since the passing of the ‘Mariage pour tous’ law in 2013, it has solidified its status as one of the most romantic and progressive destinations for queer couples worldwide.
Whether you envision a high-fashion editorial weekend in a chateau or a sun-drenched, relaxed celebration among the vineyards, the French “Art de Vivre” is for everyone. However, planning a destination wedding brings its own set of questions: Can we legally marry here? Which venues truly understand our vision? How do we find inclusive vendors?
Let’s delve into the legal side of things…

LGBTQ+ Wedding in France: The Legalities
One of the most frequent questions we receive at Chateau Bee is: “Can we actually have a legal ceremony in France?”
The short answer is yes, but with a few “French” nuances to keep in mind. Same-sex marriage in France has been legal since 2013, making it one of the earlier European countries to recognise marriage equality.
This means that LGBTQ+ couples follow the same civil marriage requirements in France as any other couple – whether for a civil ceremony at the mairie (town hall) or a symbolic celebration at a chateau or vineyard.
The Problem: The Residency Requirement
While France welcomes all love, the law requires at least one member of the couple (or one of their parents) to have resided in the commune (town) where the wedding is taking place for at least 30 days prior to the application. For many of our international couples flying in from the UK, US, or Australia, this residency requirement can be a bit of a logistical hurdle.
The Solution: The Symbolic Celebration
For couples who don’t meet the residency requirement for a legal gay marriage in France, the most popular and stress-free option is to complete the legal paperwork in your home country first.
Once the “boring bits” are out of the way, you are free to host a symbolic LGBTQ+ wedding in France. These ceremonies are every bit as meaningful, and cut out the difficult logistics. Because they aren’t bound by strict civil scripts, you can:
- Choose Your Celebrant: Hire a professional who speaks your language and understands your story.
- Location Freedom: Swap a sterile town hall for a sun-drenched terrace, a secret garden, or a historic chapel.
- Personalised Vows: Spend as much time as you like sharing your promises to one another.
Chateau Bee Insight: Most guests won’t even know the difference! They will experience the day as a full, emotional wedding day – complete with the “I dos,” the exchange of rings, and a spectacular dinner.

Frequently Asked Questions: Planning Your LGBTQ+ Wedding in France
Is same-sex marriage legal in France for foreigners?
Yes, same-sex marriage has been legal in France since 2013 under the Mariage pour tous law. However, for international couples, there is a residency requirement: at least one partner (or one of their parents) must have lived in the specific French town for at least 30 consecutive days prior to the wedding.
Because of this, most of our couples choose to have a legal ceremony in their home country and host a spectacular symbolic wedding in France at their chosen chateau. This allows for total creative freedom without the French paperwork!
How do I find inclusive wedding venues in France?
The most reliable way is to use a curated service like Chateau Bee. While many directories simply list every venue, we personally vet the venues in our selection.
Look for venues that:
– Feature diverse couples in their marketing and galleries.
– Have a “Non-Discrimination” policy.
– Offer gender-neutral or “equal caliber” getting-ready suites.
Which region is best for a destination wedding France LGBTQ?
While France is generally very progressive, three regions stand out for LGBTQ+ couples:
– The French Riviera: Known for its glamorous, international vibe and vibrant LGBTQ+ scenes in cities like Nice and Cannes.
– Paris: The epitome of romance and “Art de Vivre,” offering world-class inclusivity and iconic backdrops.
–Bordeaux & the Dordogne: Perfect for those seeking a relaxed, chic vineyard wedding with a community of open-minded, international venue owners.
How do I find inclusive wedding vendors in France?
Finding the right team is about more than just a portfolio; it’s about shared values. We recommend asking your venue, wedding planer, or checking social media using the relevant hashtags.
What is the average cost for an LGBTQ+ chateau wedding in France?
The budget varies wildly depending on the region and the level of luxury. On average, a 3-day wedding for 70 guests at a private French chateau can start from €25,000 for a 1 day-1 night experience. This usually includes venue rental and the “core” suppliers such as catering on the day, sound and light, photographer, wedding planner and florist.
Is France welcoming of same-sex weddings?
Absolutely. France is consistently ranked as one of the most LGBTQ-friendly countries in the world. From the bustling streets of Le Marais in Paris to the quiet hamlets of Burgundy, “Love is Love” is a sentiment deeply woven into the modern French fabric.
