LGBTQ+ Wedding in France: The Legalities

One of the most frequent questions we receive at Chateau Bee is: “Can we actually have a legal ceremony in France?”

The short answer is yes, but with a few “French” nuances to keep in mind. Same-sex marriage in France has been legal since 2013, making it one of the earlier European countries to recognise marriage equality. 

This means that LGBTQ+ couples follow the same civil marriage requirements in France as any other couple – whether for a civil ceremony at the mairie (town hall) or a symbolic celebration at a chateau or vineyard.

The Problem: The Residency Requirement

While France welcomes all love, the law requires at least one member of the couple (or one of their parents) to have resided in the commune (town) where the wedding is taking place for at least 30 days prior to the application. For many of our international couples flying in from the UK, US, or Australia, this residency requirement can be a bit of a logistical hurdle.

The Solution: The Symbolic Celebration

For couples who don’t meet the residency requirement for a legal gay marriage in France, the most popular and stress-free option is to complete the legal paperwork in your home country first.

Chateau Les Carrasses

When we visited, we loved the estate’s first impression. As we approached along the cypress tree avenue, we marvelled at the sight of the chateau, standing gracefully with its elegant turrets, framed by vineyards, forests and the Pyrenees mountains on the horizon.

Stepping through the chateau doors we were then taken aback by the classy interiors, the harmonious design throughout the various spaces and the curated furniture and art.

On the Friday, treat your guests to a wine tasting session before gathering everyone for a buffet on one of the terraces. On your big day, have your blessing in the gardens, or (our favourite option!) by the gorgeously chiseled green house. The rumour has it that it was built by no other than Gustave Eiffel! (AKA Mr Eiffel Tower). The wedding dinner will take place on the restaurant terrace with its gorgeous vistas.
