How Much Does a Destination Wedding Cost in France?

We understand that you are likely seeking a definitive answer; however, providing a single fixed figure is challenging, as the final investment is heavily influenced by your choice of location, guest count, and the specific creative vendors you commission.

That being said, on average, a destination wedding in France in 2027 will typically cost between €25,000 and €90,000 for a guest list of 80 people.

However, average is a broad term in the land of luxury. Your final investment will fluctuate based on various parameters: region, guest count, exclusivity, venue standard and expectations. While a rustic chic farmhouse in the Dordogne might offer a full weekend for €30,000, a high-fashion event on the Côte d’Azur or near Paris can exceed €200,000.

Understanding Venue Hire vs. Total Wedding Budget

In France, venues generally operate under two distinct business models: Dry Hire and All-Inclusive.

Let’s differentiate these two terms.

What is Dry Hire?

A certain number of French chateaux and French wedding venues are Dry Hire. This means you are paying for the exclusive use of the property and its accommodation, but very little else.

What does this mean:

  • You have total control over your choice of caterer, florist, and wine (often with no corkage fee).
  • You (or your planner) must coordinate every element, from hiring all suppliers to arranging all the details on the day.

What is All-Inclusive?

All-inclusive venues offer a price per head.

What does this mean:

  • One main point of contact. The tables, chairs, linens, staff, and food are all handled in-house.
  • You may be restricted to a set menu or a specific list of preferred vendors.

Chateau Bee insight: An all-inclusive package does not mean a template wedding. In-house planners excel at custom styling, ensuring the day reflects your personal aesthetic. Menus are entirely tailorable, and substituting external suppliers – such as your preferred DJ or photographer – is typically welcomed. Essentially, there is still flexibility and personalisation even with an all-inclusive package.

In this section we will showcase some of the venues in our selection and the wedding packages / estimated budgets of a wedding at that venue.

Sample Quote for La Belle Fontaine

At this venue, suppliers are not imposed; however, here is a sample quote for a wedding at the venue:

  • Friday to Monday rental of 8500€ and this includes the pavilion tent, a cocktail tent, chairs, tables, glassware, tableware, decor, PA system, catering equipment etc. so you are ready to go with all the essentials.
  • For catering you are looking at an entry point of €35 per head (relaxed style…something like a BBQ or hog roast spread). The higher end of the catering spectrum is normally around €75 per head.
  • The owners don’t charge corkage and will help you get sorted with beer kegs and wine if you need help. Otherwise it’s completely up to you. An average price might be around €20pp for the entire weekend.
  • Regarding musicians it really depends on what you want. A single musician such as a saxophonist would be an entry point and can be €250 for 2 hours. You can also just use the PA system (included with LC) and a play list.
  • Band prices vary a lot. From €500 to €2000 is generally what people book.
  • Late night DJ. You will be looking at €900 to €1800 depending what you want from them.
  • Photographer / videographer…quotes can be from €1500 to €4500
  • Day after breakfast, the local boulangerie is the best. It is not expensive to get a selection of breads, pain au chocolate, croissant etc.
  • Day after BBQ. The owners can get their team to come in and do the BBQ for €25pp (burgers and fries with chicken goujons, mozzarella sticks, lovely fresh salads etc.). Alternatively, you may want to do a BBQ yourselves with your friends or get in a caterer starting at €35 per head for 80 people.

So you can do a wedding with 80 people for between €20,000 to €25,000 all included.

Note: please understand that this is just a rough budget simulation provided by the owner on the basis of the suppliers he knows; it is not a set package nor a contractual offer. Ultimately there is a wide range of weddings at La Belle Fontaine in terms of how people do things and on the overall spend.

The Factors That Inflate (or Deflate) Chateau Pricing

In the world of French weddings, no two quotes are created equal. If you find yourself wondering why one chateau costs €8,000 and another costs €25,000, it usually comes down to a few high-impact variables. In this section, we will go through the variables such as regions and seasons that will impact the final price tag.

The Season: High Season vs. Mid & Low Season

The date you pick is the single biggest price slider in your planning process.

  • High Season (June – August): Expect to pay full price. Demand is at its peak, and venues often have a minimum 2 or 3-night stay requirement.
  • Mid-Season (May & September): The “sweet spot” for many. The weather is often perfect, but you might find a 10–15% reduction in hire fees compared to July.
  • Low Season (October – April): If you fancy a cozy winter wedding with roaring fireplaces, you can often negotiate significant discounts – sometimes up to 30% or 40% off the peak summer rate.

The Duration: Single Day Hire vs. Exclusive-Use Weekends

The one-day wedding is becoming a rarity for destination events in France. Most of our handpicked venues specialise in exclusive-use weekends (3 days / 2 nights). While a single-day hire (if available) is cheaper on paper, an exclusive weekend allows you to host a welcome dinner, the wedding day, and a recovery brunch. For 2027, the value is in the experience – turning a wedding into a mini-vacation for your loved ones.

On-Site Accommodation: The Cost-Sharing Secret

Here is a professional tip that many couples overlook: Accommodation can actually deflate your venue hire fee. If a chateau “sleeps 30” and the rental fee is €15,000, you aren’t necessarily footing that entire bill. It is common practice for guests to contribute to the cost of their rooms (similar to booking a hotel).

For example: If 30 guests pay €150 per night for 2 nights, that is €9,000 back into your wedding budget. Suddenly, that €15,000 exclusive hire feels a lot more like €6,000.

Venue Standout

When browsing our collection, you might wonder how one estate can command €8,000 while another stands at €25,000. The distinction goes far beyond square footage. A five-star luxury hotel or palace naturally carries a premium baseline for its prestigious reputation, pristine manicured grounds, and around-the-clock silver service. Conversely, a charmingly rustic farmhouse or boutique domain offers a more relaxed, country-chic aesthetic at a gentler price point.

However, the real factor lies in what happens behind the scenes. A higher wedding venue hire cost in France might include conciergerie services or dedicated on-site management and coordination. When assessing our handpicked and vetted selection, always look past the initial price tag – the true value of a venue is found in the depth of its details.

The Region

Geography plays a massive role in your 2027 budget.

The South:

Provence and the French Riviera (Côte d’Azur) come with a higher price tag. You are paying for the iconic light, the lavender, and the prestige. Suppliers here (florists, caterers, hair stylists) often have higher base rates.

The North & Southwest:

Regions like the Loire Valley, Gascony, or Northern France often allow your budget to stretch further. You can often secure a more grand chateau for the same price as a smaller villa in the South East.

A Word of Caution: Don’t generalise too much. A world-class luxury chateau in Normandy can still out–price a rustic farmhouse in Provence. Always look at the individual venue’s details.

In-House Support vs. Outsourced Planning

Finally, consider the invisible cost of planning.

  • In-House Coordination: Some venues include an on-site coordinator who handles the logistics of the venue itself. This is a huge value-add.
  • Outsourced Planning: If your venue is Dry Hire and you have a complex vision, you will likely need an independent wedding planner. In 2027, professional planners in France typically charge either a flat fee (starting around €6,000) or a percentage (usually 10–15%) of the total wedding spend.

The Bottom Line: The Venue + Caterer + Wedding Planning combo will always be your biggest expense. Deciding early if you want a venue that provides the planning or if you want to bring your own team will dictate your remaining budget.

Hidden Costs to Watch out For When Planning Your Destination Wedding

Every wedding budget can have its hidden costs – those pesky, invisible expenses that don’t appear on the initial glossy brochure but can nibble away at your floral budget if you aren’t careful.

At Chateau Bee, we pride ourselves on transparency. To help you plan for 2027 with total clarity, here are the three most common hidden costs we see in the French wedding market.

Corkage Fees

France is the land of wine, but that doesn’t always mean the wine flows for free.

  • If you choose a venue with an on-site restaurant or vineyard, they may charge a corkage fee (anywhere from €3 to €25 per bottle) if you want to bring in your own champagne or wine.
  • Many venues are corkage-free, meaning you can visit a local cave (cellar), buy at wholesale prices, and save thousands. Always ask the venue: “Is there a fee for bringing my own alcohol?”

The Marquee

If you are inviting 120 guests but the chateau’s ornate dining hall only seats 80, you are going to need a marquee.

  • For a high-quality marquee with flooring, lighting, and a catering annex, prices in 2027 typically start at €4,000 and can rise to €12,000+ for bespoke glass structures.
  • Even if you plan for an outdoor dinner under the stars, many venues require you to have a marquee on standby as a Plan B in case of rain. It’s a significant line item that needs to be in your budget from Day 1.

Local Taxes (Taxe de Séjour)

This is a small but mandatory French tourist tax that catches many international couples off guard.

  • The taxe de séjour is a per-person, per-night fee (usually ranging from €0.50 to €4.00) charged by the local municipality.
  • For a guest list of 80 people staying for 3 nights, this can add roughly €200–€800 to your final bill. While not a deal-breaker, it’s often invoiced separately at the end of your stay.

The Music Tax (SACEM)

If you plan on having a DJ, a live band, or even just a very loud Spotify playlist, you need to know about SACEM.

  • SACEM (Société des Auteurs, Compositeurs et Éditeurs de Musique) is the French professional body that collects royalties for songwriters and composers. In France, playing music at a public or organised event – including a wedding – technically requires a license.
  • The Cost: For a private wedding, the fee usually ranges from €150 to €450, depending on the number of guests and the venue’s capacity.
  • Who pays for the SACEM? Often, the venue will have an annual contract that covers this, but some will pass the cost directly to the couple. Always check your contract for redevance SACEM to see if it’s included or an extra.

Pro Tips: How to Save Money on Your 2027 French Wedding

Planning a luxury chateau wedding doesn’t have to mean unlimited spending. Here are five savvy ways to make your 2027 budget work harder without sacrificing the French aesthetic.

1. Have a Midweek Wedding

The traditional Saturday / weekend wedding is the most expensive day of the week. By moving your celebration to a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, you can often negotiate 20-30% off the venue hire fee. Plus, your preferred photographers and florists are much more likely to be available!

2. Hire Local Vendors

Transportation and accommodation for vendors is budget spent on logistics rather than the experience.

Aim to hire vendors within a 50km radius of the chateau. Not only does this save on travel fees, but local vendors often have a better relationship with the venue staff, ensuring a smoother day.

3. Choose a Champagne Alternative

You are in France – the land of incredible sparkling wine! While Champagne carries a premium price tag, a Crémant de Loire or Crémant de Bordeaux is made using the exact same traditional method and often tastes superior to entry-level Champagnes for half the price.

4. Guest Contributions for Accommodation

As mentioned earlier, don’t be afraid to ask guests to pay for their on-site rooms. Most guests expect to pay for a hotel when attending a wedding; paying to stay in a historic chateau is an experience for them and a massive budget relief for you.

5. Smaller Guest Lists

In 2027, the Micro-Wedding (under 40 guests) and the Elopement (under 10 guests) remain the most effective ways to slash costs while increasing luxury.

Reducing your guest list from 100 to 60 doesn’t just save you 40 dinner plates; it saves you on 4–5 tables of flowers, linens, stationery, and potentially even the size of the marquee you need.

6. Choose a Lesser-Known Region

Looking at regions away from Provence and Paris often results in lower venue costs.

Take a look at these regions for example:

  • The Charente: Stunning aesthetics with a much lower cost of living than the Bordeaux area.
  • Northern France & Normandy: Perfect for UK-based couples to save on travel costs, offering grand, aristocratic estates at a fraction of the Parisian price tag.
  • The Vendée & Pays de la Loire: Incredible coastal and countryside venues that offer high-end service without the Prestige Tax of more famous regions.

7. Shoulder Season & Winter Weddings

We’ve mentioned the high season, but for 2027, the Shoulder Seasons (late April or October) are becoming increasingly popular. The light is softer for photos, the vendors are less fatigued, and the venue hire can be 20% cheaper. If you are brave enough for a winter wedding (December–March), you can find absolute steals on some of the most prestigious properties in our selection.

8. DIY Décor

Handling your own styling – such as sourcing fabrics, arranging candles, or selecting local, seasonal blooms for simple bud vases – is an excellent way to lower your french chateau wedding cost while adding a deeply personal touch to your day.

However, destination couples should proceed with caution; executing a hands-on vision at a sprawling French estate requires a massive investment of time and meticulous organisation, and navigating local markets without fluent French can introduce a distinct layer of cross-border stress. Before committing to a hands-on approach, honestly assess your timeline and language skills; if coordinating these logistics across borders feels too daunting, it is the exact moment the strategic value of a professional wedding planner comes into play.

9. Hire a Wedding Planner

While hiring a professional coordinator when trying to limit your destination wedding cost in France might seem entirely counterintuitive, bringing a seasoned expert on board early is one of the most effective ways to protect your capital. Acting as your financial shield and local advocate, a destination planner bypasses the language barrier to match you instantly with trusted, vetted vendors that fit your specific wedding budget in France, cutting out the hours spent chasing unrealistic quotes.

Ultimately, by streamlining complex overseas logistics, dodging hidden venue fees, and expertly negotiating local rates, a professional planner doesn’t just save you invaluable time—they frequently save you their own fee through clever, strategic budget optimisation.

France vs. UK Wedding Cost Comparison

For our British couples, the Chateau vs. Stately Home debate is a common one. While the headline figures for a UK wedding often seem lower, the cost-per-hour and quality of produce tell a different story.

The Duration of the Event

In the UK, a standard wedding is an 8–10 hour event. In France, a chateau wedding is almost always a 3-day experience. You are effectively getting three events (Welcome Dinner, Wedding, Recovery Brunch) for the price of one high-end UK venue hire.

The Cost of Wine

In the UK, a decent bottle of wedding wine typically starts at £25–£35 via a venue’s wine list. In France, you can source world-class local wines for €8–€12 a bottle with zero corkage at many of our vetted venues.

The Cost of Venue Hire

A premium Cotswolds barn or a London hotel can easily command £15,000–£25,000 for a single day. A French chateau at the same price point offers exclusive use of the entire estate and accommodation for your bridal party for the whole weekend.

France vs. US Wedding Cost Comparison

For our American clients, the destination wedding in France appeal is often driven by a desire for authenticity and a European Summer experience that simply cannot be replicated in a stateside ballroom or vineyard.

The Luxury Weddings

In the US, particularly in hubs like New York, California, or Florida, a luxury wedding often starts at $75,000 – $100,000 for a single day. In France, that same budget buys a literal palace, multi-day catering, and an environment steeped in centuries of history.

Guest Count

US weddings tend to be larger (120-150+ guests). By hosting a destination wedding in France, the guest list naturally self-filters to your closest 60-80 people. This allows you to reallocate your budget to provide a high-luxury experience for your inner circle.

Service & Aesthetic

In the US, you often have to build the aesthetic with heavy rentals (draping, lighting, furniture). In a French Chateau, the architecture is the decor. You spend less on hiding a room and more on enhancing a masterpiece.

Chateau Bee Insight: US couples often find that even with flight costs factored in, the total spend on a French wedding is comparable to a high-end wedding in a major US city – but the memory return on investment of a weekend in the Loire Valley or Provence is significantly higher.

The Ultimate French Chateau Wedding Budget Checklist

Managing a budget across borders requires a mix of bird’s-eye-view planning and granular detail. Use this checklist to ensure every Euro is accounted for, from the venue to the florals.

1. The Venue & Logistics

  • Exclusive Hire Fee: Does this cover 2 nights, 3 nights, or just 24 hours?
  • Accommodation: How many guests sleep on-site? Have you decided if guests will contribute to the cost of their rooms?
  • Cleaning & Staffing: Is the “end of stay” cleaning included, or is there a separate fee?
  • The “Plan B” Space: Does the venue have an indoor hall large enough for your guest count, or must you budget for a marquee?
  • Heating/Cooling: If you are marrying in the shoulder season, are there extra costs for heating the chateau or the pool?

2. Catering & Beverages

  • Catering Quote: Does it include the cocktail hour (vin d’honneur), the 3-course dinner, and the late-night snacks?
  • Staffing Ratios: Does the quote include enough waiters to keep the champagne flowing?
  • Equipment Hire: Are tables, chairs, linens, glassware, and silver included, or must these be hired via the caterer?
  • Corkage fees: If you are bringing your own wine and champagne, is there a per-bottle fee?
  • The Day-After Brunch: Have you factored in food and service for the poolside recovery?

3. Photography & Videography

  • Base Package: How many hours of coverage are included? (For a chateau wedding, you usually need 10–12 hours).
  • Travel & Accommodation: Are you paying for the team’s flights, car rental, and 2 nights of lodging?
  • The Second Shooter: For larger chateaux, do you need a second angle to capture the ceremony and cocktail hour simultaneously?

4. Aesthetics: Florals, Hair & Makeup

  • Floral Design: Have you budgeted for the “Big Three”: Ceremony (Arch/Aisle), Personal (Bouquets), and Reception (Tables)?
  • Installation Fees: Does the florist charge extra for the labor of setting up (and clearing away) large displays?
  • Bridal Beauty: Does your quote include the trial and the wedding day?
  • The Bridal Party: Have you accounted for hair and makeup for your bridesmaids and mothers?
  • Touch-up Service: Will you pay for your artist to stay on-site for a second look before the reception?

5. Entertainment & Technical

  • Music: Have you budgeted for the DJ, a live band, or perhaps a solo strings player for the ceremony?
  • SACEM Fee: Has the music royalty tax been paid by you or the venue?
  • Sound & Lighting: Does the DJ provide the dancefloor lighting, or is that a separate decor cost?
  • Power & Generators: If you are hosting a marquee wedding, do you need an external power source to avoid tripping the chateau’s fuses?

6. The Safety Net Costs

  • Wedding Insurance: Does your policy cover destination-specific issues?
  • Exchange Rate Buffer: Do you have a 5% buffer in your bank account to cover currency fluctuations between now and 2027?
  • Local Taxes: Have you set aside a small fund for the taxe de séjour (local tourist tax)?

FAQ: Your Destination Wedding in France Budget Questions Answered

How much does a French chateau wedding cost on average?

For 2027, the average cost for a high-quality chateau wedding with 80 guests is between €25,000 and €85,000. This range typically covers exclusive venue hire for two nights, catering, photography, and essential vendors. However, luxury estates in premium regions like the French Riviera can see budgets exceed €200,000.

Is it cheaper to get married in France than the UK?

While the upfront price of a French venue might seem higher, the value is often superior. A France vs. UK wedding cost comparison shows that for roughly the same total spend (£40,000+), you receive a 3-day experience in France compared to a 10-hour event in the UK. Furthermore, lower alcohol costs and the lack of corkage fees at many French venues offer significant savings.

What is the typical wedding venue hire cost in France?

For a vetted, exclusive-use chateau in 2027, the wedding venue hire cost in France typically ranges from €8,000 to €30,000. This usually includes accommodation for 20–30 guests for two nights. If you opt for a midweek or low-season date, you can often find stunning venues starting at €7,000.

What are the main factors in a French chateau wedding cost breakdown?

Your budget is generally split into three main areas:
The Venue, Catering , Planning (50-60%): This is the largest portion of your wedding price breakdown.
Creative Vendors (25%): Photography, videography, florals, and music.
Logistics & Attire (15%): Wedding outfits, transport, and hair/makeup.

How much does a wedding in the South of France cost?

A South of France wedding cost (specifically in Provence or the Côte d’Azur) is generally 20-30% higher than in other regions. Due to the high demand and prestige, a luxury wedding for 100 guests in these areas will often start at €60,000, whereas a similar wedding in the Dordogne or Loire Valley might cost closer to €40,000.

Can I have a 50-guest wedding in France on a budget?

Yes. A 50-guest wedding might start from €25,000. By choosing a lesser-known region like the Charente or Normandy and opting for a more rustic, laid back, venue, you can maintain a exciting French destination feel while keeping your wedding budget in France manageable.

Are there hidden costs when getting married in France?

Yes, couples should be aware of the SACEM (music tax), which is usually between €150 and €450, and the Taxe de Séjour (tourist tax), which is a small per-person, per-night fee. Additionally, always check for corkage fees.
