Set in six hectares of parkland at the gateway to the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Natural Park, Chateau Cantal is a wonderful discovery for couples dreaming of a French château wedding somewhere a little different. Originally built in the 12th century, the château has remained in the same family for more than 800 years, passing through generations who have carefully preserved its remarkable character. With its romantic turrets, neo-Gothic architecture and extraordinary historic interiors, this is a truly special setting for a wedding in Central France.
A Historic Chateau Wedding in the Auvergne
Imagine exchanging your vows in the château’s beautiful park, surrounded by mature trees and with the Cantal mountains stretching into the distance. Afterwards, gather your guests for cocktails in the gardens or make use of the château’s magnificent historic salons.
Inside, the Grand Hall is particularly impressive. With its soaring ceiling, elaborate wood panelling, monumental staircase and historic Flemish tapestries, it provides a spectacular setting for a wedding cocktail reception.
For dinner and dancing, a beautifully renovated former barn offers a dedicated reception room of 180 m², accommodating up to 150 seated guests.
The following day, the estate can also be privately hired for a relaxed brunch and a dip in the pool.
Stay Together at Chateau Cantal
Chateau Cantal can accommodate up to 42 guests on the estate, allowing your closest family and friends to stay at the heart of the celebrations. The accommodation includes bedrooms within the château itself (sleeping 18 guests), a dormitory for 10 and a separate gîte in the park for 14.
For the rest of your guests, additional accommodation can be found within 5 km.
Despite its peaceful countryside location, Chateau Cantal is surprisingly accessible for international weddings. Aurillac Airport is just 15 km away, with two daily flights to Paris, while Rodez Airport, approximately two hours away by car, offers direct flights to London.
Why We Selected Chateau Cantal
There are several reasons why Chateau Cantal caught our attention, but we have to start with its interiors. The Grand Hall, with its magnificent wood panelling, towering ceiling and extraordinary tapestries, is quite unlike anything you would expect to find in a typical wedding venue. It has an almost cinematic quality, the sort of room that immediately transports you to another era. And the fact that the château has remained in the same family for centuries makes its history feel all the more special.
We are also particularly taken with its location. How often do you come across a wedding château on the doorstep of a regional natural park shaped by ancient volcanoes? The Parc Naturel Régional des Volcans d’Auvergne is one of France’s most extraordinary landscapes, with its sweeping valleys, volcanic peaks and unspoilt countryside. For couples looking beyond the more familiar wedding regions of France, Chateau Cantal offers something genuinely different: the chance to celebrate in a historic French château while introducing their guests to a spectacular and often overlooked part of the country.
