Why France Offers Some of the Best Wedding Locations in the World

France is unique in many ways, with a rich history, ever-changing scenery, and romance woven through it all. Often, when we picture France, we imagine long, leisurely candlelit dinners, slow, lazy mornings enjoying the small things, and simple, effortless style throughout it all.

The venues we are going to show you here are from all the different regions in France and have a variety of styles, from rustic villas to historic chateaux. We’ll also consider different budget levels, because a beautiful French wedding can still be elegantly romantic without breaking the bank.

Here at Chateau Bee, we have personally vetted the venues and visited many of them ourselves. We specialise in French wedding venues and have years of experience working closely with properties across the country. We understand not only the romance of France, but the practicalities too — helping couples find locations that align with their vision, guest list and budget.

The “Big Three”: France’s Most Iconic Wedding Regions

Starting with the ‘Big Three’ – the wedding locations that are imagined when you think of a destination wedding in France. For each region, we will tell a little bit about it, and then showcase two venues from that region. If you’re looking for iconic wedding destinations in France, look no further than these regions:

Provence

Situated in the South of France, Provence is the epitome of a Euro summer, and perfect for a destination wedding. High-end and highly sought after, Provence is perfect for couples with a healthy budget looking for that quintessential French countryside elegance

The Aesthetic: Sun-drenched lavender, ancient olive groves, and of course a glass of rosé at sunset!

Here are two venues in the Provence region:

Chateau des Lavandes

This venue undoubtedly captures the magic of Provence as you drift through vineyards, olive groves and lavender fields to a hidden Luberon paradise, leading to Chateau des Lavandes.

On the day of your wedding, say “I do” in the “jardins à la française.” Its seamless, Le Nôtre-inspired design and long cypress-lined alley make it a pure vision of a dream. Thereafter, your guests will love mingling in the park with a glass of champagne in the shade of centuries-old magnolias and cedar trees. Host your wedding dinner outside under garlands of fairy lights or in the stylish nomadic tent, which can be set facing the vineyards or the lake.

Just to the south west of Provence lies the region of Occitanie, which houses the areas of Gard, Aude, and Hérault. These “Secret South” regions offer a similar climate to Provence but with significantly better value.

The Aesthetic: Wild vineyards, Cathar castles, and Mediterranean charm without the “Provence price tag.”

Say your vows by the lavender field, under the shade of a centuries-old oak tree, or amidst the olive groves. Enjoy your cocktail on the grand terrace, dressed in floating curtains and protected by ancient hackberry trees. With its generous proportions, exposed stone, and soaring beams, it carries both a sense of grandeur and rustic warmth. And when it’s time to dance, celebrations here can continue until 5 a.m.!

If You Can’t Afford Paris, Think Normandy

Whilst the idea of Paris can seem enticing, there are a multitude of venues in Northern France – especially in Normandy – that exude the same level of romance and elegance as venues in Paris. Because the weather is more temperate, it’s an ideal choice for those who want a lush summer wedding without the sweltering heat of the South.

Normandy. Photo by Ilnur Kalimullin on Unsplash

The Aesthetic: Wild coastal cliffs, half-timbered manors, and moody, romantic landscapes that feel like a scene from an Impressionist painting. It’s the home of “Old Money” coastal style and lush, green backdrops that are a photographer’s dream.

The Logistics: Incredibly accessible for international guests, Normandy is just a 1.5 to 2.5-hour drive from Paris (CDG). It’s also perfectly positioned for UK and Irish couples arriving by ferry.

The Budget: Affordable Grandeur. Normandy is the “Best Kept Secret” for getting a massive chateau look on a modest budget. Venue hire in Normandy can be anything from €5,000–€12,000 for the entire weekend. Total wedding budgets here typically stretch much further, with high-quality celebrations possible for €25,000–€35,000.

Take a look at these Normandy wedding venues:

Chateau du Ronchay

We love this Normandy wedding venue for its incredible hospitality and attention to detail. Nestled within an extensive park and just 6 km from the sea, this château is a true haven of bliss and charm.

The owner, Myriam, compares the château to a fairytale castle — and it’s easy to see why. With its elegant turrets and intimate, inviting allure, the château feels like a magical escape. What’s even better? Myriam’s vision is for the château to feel “like home.” Here, you’ll find no trace of a corporate or impersonal approach. Instead, you’ll be welcomed like old friends and have full access to all the château’s spaces, as if it were your own.

For your wedding, the entire estate is yours to enjoy. Choose your favourite spots for each part of your celebration, from the charming gardens to the reception room, which seats up to 50 guests. Dine under the stars, then move into the Pavillon Ronsard, complete with a bar and ballroom, to continue the festivities late into the night.

Near the Loire Valley, you can find venues that offer very good value, for instance in the area of Vendée as well as Sologne.

Chateau Fleur du Ciel

Not far from Nantes, in Vendée, Chateau Fleur du Ciel is a stunning mix of medieval, Gothic and Renaissance influences and is perfect for a château wedding in Western France. It also sleeps an incredible number of people on-site, making it easy to have all your relatives close by during your stay.

Many features make this château particularly dear to our heart. First is its flexibility: for an intimate wedding, you could use the little chapel on the grounds and then move to the beautiful stained-glass gallery within the château for your dinner. For a larger event, the outbuildings can host up to 180 people.

The different spaces and numerous gardens offer great versatility when it comes to organising an event here. We particularly love the Californian giant thuya in the East Garden, which can be used as an incredible woodland photo booth.

Chateau de Bournel

This venue, steeped in history, has belonged to the same family for the last 600 years, and we appreciate the fact that it is very much a place with family values and a high degree of hospitality at its heart.

Step inside the château and be prepared to be wowed by the lavish interiors: sumptuous pieces of art, rich tapestries, chandeliers and high ceilings create a majestic, regal atmosphere.

Chateau Bee’s Hidden Gems

In this section we’re going to showcase some of our lesser known regions that still have beautiful, and affordable wedding venues in France. From the rugged coast of Brittany to the mountainous French Alps, let’s delve into these hidden gem regions.

Brittany

Brittany is for the couple who wants a wedding with deep character; it’s a land of lighthouses, stone abbeys, and a cool, salty breeze that feels rugged and wild. Because the region is less “commercialised” than Provence, you’ll often find that your budget stretches further for local seafood catering and artisanal Breton cider bars.

The Aesthetic: “Wild Atlantic Romance” – dramatic pink granite cliffs, mystical ancient forests, and emerald-green countryside.

The Logistics: While it feels like a world apart, Brittany is highly accessible. You can take the TGV high-speed train from Paris to Rennes in just 1.5 hours, or fly directly into Nantes, Brest, or Dinard. It’s a dream for UK and Irish couples who prefer to bring their own wedding kit via the many ferry links into St Malo or Roscoff.

The Budget: Great value. Brittany offers a refreshing alternative to the price tags of the South. Venue hire for historic manors or seaside estates in the summer are typically between €6,000 and €12,000. Total wedding costs here often fall in the €25,000–€40,000 range.

Take a look at these Brittany wedding venues…

Chateau du Val

This elegant Neo-Gothic South Brittany wedding venue has a beautiful reception hall with a crystal chandelier and polished parquet floors that will give your wedding a certain Versailles feel.

What we loved during our visit to Chateau du Val, besides its very elegant façade, was the flexibility to create a bespoke event. The owner is not only adorable but also flexible and open to new ideas. Furthermore, she is English herself and, with her list of recommended partners, helps couples organise the entire event.

For the ceremony, you can choose your favourite spot in the large and magical park. Pre-wedding cocktails and canapés are typically served in the château’s front gardens and on the terrace, while the wedding dinner can take place in the elegant salons or a summery marquee. After dinner, guests can admire the château and its outbuildings beautifully lit at night, with the after-party continuing in the Pavilion and flowing onto the cobbled courtyard.

Domaine du Pordor

Can you picture yourself in front of a French château with an impressive lake as a backdrop for your big day? Then the romantic Chateau du Pordor could be the one for you. Located in Brittany, between Rennes and Nantes, this French wedding venue sits at the water’s edge, right at the heart of a 30-hectare estate.

This estate provides an exceptional boho-chic environment with various spaces that can be used throughout your wedding day. On the big day, your guests will marvel at the sight of the château adorned with an abundance of hydrangeas and wisteria. They can then wander down to the ceremony in a tree clearing by the lake. There, wooden benches, an arch and bouquets of wildflowers can be set up to make your blessing a magical moment. To give that extra wow factor, you could even make your grand entrance on the lake, arriving by rowing boat.

The Dordogne & Lot

Located to the east of Bordeaux, and north of Toulouse lies the regions of Dordogne / Lot. You can recognise Dordogne (also called Perigord) and Lot by the style of their buildings, made with the famous golden stones, and their jaw dropping villages often adorned with old medieval castles. Whilst Dordogne is fairly touristic, the Lot is a bit more off the beaten track and is one of France’s best-kept secrets.

Dordogne. Photo: Paola Capelletto

The Aesthetic: “The Land of a Thousand Castles” – golden stone and medieval villages.

The Logistics: Highly accessible for UK/Irish guests via Bergerac airport.

The Budget: Mid-Range. Due to the high volume of venues, the market is competitive. Weekend hire is usually €8,000–€20,000, with total wedding costs around €35,000–€60,000 and more depending on guest count, number of days, season and expectations.

Chateau Severin

Chateau Severin offers the perfect setting for a relaxed, romantic wedding. We love the homely and cosy feel of the venue, as well as the French country style decoration.

This 19th century French castle is sympathetically restored throughout and still retains many of its original features. We very much like the quirky bamboo forest that will welcome you once you pass the large gates. Also worth mentioning is the “Chapel”, a vast room with large beams that can sit up to 100 people for a wedding blessing. As an alternative you could have the ceremony outdoors in the Chateau’s verdant park: you’ll just need to pick your favourite spot amongst 10 acres of land!

Chateau d’Oche

Located in Périgord, the land of truffles and foie gras in Dordogne, South West France, lies a beautiful and romantic château wedding venue, Chateau d’Oche.

On the day of your wedding, enjoy several stunning spaces at the château, either indoors or outdoors. For your blessing, gather your guests by one of the two lovely chapels or say “I do” amidst ancient trees in the parkland. During the cocktail hour, let your guests mingle and stroll among the 13-hectare private estate or choose a more intimate setting in the Courtyard. Dinner can be served outdoors in the Courtyard as the sun sets, illuminated by festoon lighting, within a spacious marquee, or indoors in the Event Suite, which features elegant chequered flooring and beautiful candelabras.

Chateau Naudou

Located in South West France, the romantic Chateau Naudou has the air of a classic Italian chateau. We are particularly fond of its picture perfect courtyard, beautifully lined with cypress trees and its impressive 19m² turquoise pool underscoring the view of this Toulouse wedding venue.

The ceremony could take place on the East side of the chateau. There, two towers frame a wisteria clad façade. With its central pediment and classical balustrade it makes a perfect backdrop for your blessing. During the cocktail hour, let your guests take a stroll into the mature parkland with cedars, lines of poplars and centenarian oaks. Afterward, have your wedding meal outdoors beneath twinkling fairy lights, followed by dancing on the stunning outdoor dance floor.

Chateau de Puissentut

Nestled amongst rolling hills, Chateau de Puissentut is a well-kept secret, a dreamy chateau in South of France that we visited and love for many reasons…It will be a perfect setting for your wedding in France.

We are particularly drawn to the distinctive appearance of the venue. Its half-timbered structure, complemented by sage-colored shutters and surrounded by blooming rose and lavender bushes, creates an ambiance reminiscent of an enchanting haven. We also love the interiors, which are authentic but with a contemporary twist. There, the creamy exposed stone walls, pastel touches and natural materials – oatmeal linen, white cotton quilts – have been beautifully paired with bold pieces of art and striking coloured walls.

Helpful Chateau Bee Tips on Choosing Your Wedding Venue

If location or style isn’t helping you to narrow down your choices, have a think about these factors:

1. Guest Count

Start with numbers. Are you planning an intimate 30-person celebration or a 150-guest weekend wedding? Some French venues specialise in exclusive, smaller gatherings, while others are designed for large-scale, multi-day events with on-site accommodation. Your guest list will quickly eliminate (or confirm) certain regions and properties.

2. Travel Logistics

Think about how your guests will arrive. Proximity to international airports, train links and transfer times can make a significant difference — especially for destination weddings. Regions like the South of France or areas near Paris offer strong transport connections, while more rural locations may require additional planning.

3. Budget Clarity

Venue hire is only one piece of the puzzle. Catering style, accommodation, exclusivity periods and supplier flexibility all influence your overall spend. Some regions naturally command higher price points, while others offer exceptional value for similar aesthetics. Understanding what’s included — and what isn’t — is essential before falling in love with a venue.

4. Seasonality

France transforms throughout the year. Lavender blooms in early summer, vineyards glow in autumn and coastal regions shine in late spring and September. Peak season (typically June–September) brings higher demand and pricing, while shoulder seasons can offer both savings and softer light.

5. Personal Style

Finally, come back to you. Are you drawn to grandeur and formality? Relaxed countryside charm? Coastal glamour? Your venue should reflect your personality as a couple, not just a trend.

Frequently Asked Questions on Wedding Locations in France

How do I choose between the different wedding locations in France?

Selecting the right wedding location in France starts with your guest experience and budget. If you prioritize iconic glamour and easy global flight access, Paris and the French Riviera are unbeatable. For those seeking a relaxed, multi-day “Chateau life” experience with better value, regions like Dordogne, Gers, or Normandy offer stunning historical estates at a fraction of the price of the more famous southern coast.

What are the most budget-friendly wedding locations in France for 2026?

For couples seeking “Affordable Luxury,” the best-value wedding locations in France are currently found in the South West France and the Northern regions. These “hidden gem” regions offer magnificent chateaux for weekend hire starting from €5,000. By choosing these lesser-known areas over Provence or Paris, you can often save up to 30% on venue and catering costs without sacrificing the quintessential French aesthetic.

Which wedding locations in France have the best travel logistics for international guests?

The most accessible wedding locations in France are those within a two-hour radius of major hubs like Paris (CDG), Nice (NCE), and Bordeaux (BOD). Normandy is a fantastic choice for its proximity to Paris, while the Loire Valley is easily reached via high-speed TGV. For guests traveling from the UK or Ireland, the western regions of Brittany and Dordogne offer convenient ferry links and regional airport access.

How far in advance should I book my French wedding venue?

For the most popular regions like Provence or Bordeaux, we recommend booking 14–18 months in advance, especially for peak Saturday dates in June or September. If you are flexible with a midweek date or are looking in “Hidden Gem” regions like the Gers or Charente, a 12-month lead time is often sufficient to secure your dream estate.

How do I legally get married in France as a foreigner?

To have your ceremony legally recognised in France, you must have a civil ceremony at a French Town Hall (Mairie). This usually requires one partner to reside in the commune for at least 30 continuous days. Most international couples find it much simpler to handle the legal paperwork in their home country first and host a beautiful, non-binding symbolic ceremony or religious blessing at their chosen French wedding venue.
