We love La Cannonerie for its distinctive look and feel. We went there on a sunny, glorious day at the end of the summer, driving through a rolling patchwork of vineyards and fields. Once there, we were immediately impressed by the beauty and tranquility of this French country wedding venue, which was formerly a Cognac estate.
Dating back to the 17th century, La Cannonerie is a white stone building located in Charente Maritime, not far from Bordeaux, La Rochelle, Ile de Ré et Ile d’Oléron. It is a collection of seven renovated cottages, set around a large, impressive courtyard.
Your ceremony could take place in the courtyard and for the wedding dinner you have several options… if the weather is nice you would be welcome to eat al fresco. You could also use the loggia, a covered gallery with wide stone arches, which will allow you to be sheltered whilst making the most of the outside space. Finally there is also on the domaine a party barn that can sit up to 100 people. Previously the stables for the Estate, the party barn has a beautiful timbered ceiling, scattered with fairy lights and double doors that open out onto the courtyard.
The day after, bring your guests together once more at the domaine for a relaxed BBQ featuring delicious local produce. Then, make your way to the pool and unwind in the sun.
The venue can sleep 36 people on site and there is plenty of accommodation nearby. We particularly appreciate the style of the interiors which are sympathetic to the building, with exposed stonework, fresh decoration and elegant colour schemes.
Finally let’s mention that the estate is owned by a charming family who will welcome you heartily.
To summarise, we think that La Cannonerie would be a wonderful venue for those who want to get married in France in a relaxed and elegant setting, adjacent to rolling vineyards.
Things to do nearby: the spa town of Jonzac, just 5 kms away, will delight your guests, with its fantastic covered market and French atmosphere. Do some kayaking in Jarnac, some cycling in the vineyards, and explore the lovely towns of Cognac or Saintes. The domaine is 40 minutes from pretty fishing villages and located about an hour from the beaches of the Côte Sauvage, La Palmyre and Royan. L’Ile de Ré and the Ile d’Oléron are close enough for a day trip.
